For questions about the Rubenstein Fellows Academy, contact Laura Howes, director of the program from 2014-2021. The final report documents the Rubenstein Fellows and their impact. Nick Hanauer: The challenge, of course, to addressing climate change is to rewire the economy with new regulations and incentives so that the economic activity creates a more sustainable planet, not a less sustainable planet. The program came to a close in 2021 but the impact of the Fellows at Duke, in the world, and on our alumni will surely continue. Sarah Bloom Raskin: We still have quite a bit of work to do in the financial regulatory space. The Rubenstein Fellows Academy was supported by a generous gift from David M. Collectively, the nine Rubenstein Fellows engaged deeply in the life of the university including teaching undergraduate and professional student classes, engaging with alumni and student-athletes, cultivating new archives at the Duke Libraries, leading Bass Connections and DukeEngage projects, mentoring and advising students, making career connections, shaping faculty research agendas, and writing new books. Over eight years, the program brought a rich mix of talent to Duke to enhance the intellectual life of students and faculty. The course will conclude with an assessment of the overall state of financial markets as one of the most important arenas in the struggle to meet the great challenges posed by climate change. We will also face the real challenges that such firms face when trying to adapt. We will consider what has still to be done before we can really evaluate the “green” performance of firms and funds. Many market operators claim to be “green,” but at this point the methods for determining the veracity of the claims remain very underdeveloped and often contradictory. We will also assess the recognition of the challenge by financial market participants and their actual and potential responses to it.Ī particularly thorny area is that of market analytics. Once the markets and market participants are understood, the course will review the diverse roles of government agents and regulators, each of whom can have a far-reaching impact in shaping the markets and market behavior. This is important to understand the broad ranging impact and opportunities for addressing climate change. Recognition and commitments by governments, including most particularly the United States, China, and Europe, will then be reviewed, before we consider the multiple linkages between finance and climate change, including the adverse impact of cryptocurrency.Īgainst this introduction the course will then delve into the various dimensions of financial markets and the players involved. We will review the status of climate change science to gain an understanding of the challenge facing all of us. This course will focus on one of the most important elements in combatting, adapting to and mitigating the impact of climate change, namely the role of finance.
